Cosmos-Maya, the India and Singapore-based animation studio, has launched a new sales arm called WowKidz Distribution.
The launch comes ahead of next week’s Mipcom, where the WowKidz team will make their debut and seek to acquire content for distribution into Asia-Pacific.
Anish Mehta, CEO, Cosmos-Maya, says the move is a natural progression from its roots in content production as for many years the team “have been distributing our own content successfully across APAC”.
“Thereby venturing further into the distribution arena with successful international brands through WowKidz Distribution was the next logical and synergistic business decision,” Anish adds.
The studio boasts a 65 per cent share of India’s domestic animation production market, making 50 half-hours of content a month, and is looking to leverage that position as a major distributor for foreign studios.
Joris Eckelkamp, Head - Business Development, Europe for Cosmos-Maya says: “WowKidz Distribution is an effort that will negate the geographical and language barrier for content and through our network across the world, will address the need gap in the market effectively.”
It can also tap into the extensive network of Emerald Media, the Pan-Asian media investment platform backed by US private equity giant KKR, which has a controlling stake in the company.
Devdatta Potnis, SVP, Revenue & Corporate Strategy, Cosmos-Maya, is spearheading the initiative and will lead a hand-picked team overseeing the launch of WowKidz Distribution.
“With WowKidz Distribution, we will be the gateway for global content, into Asia to begin with and then scale up the geographies,” Devdatta adds. “The groundwork for the same has been on for a while and come Mipcom and we will announce our first slate of acquisitions.”
