Captain Marvel has smashed through the glass ceiling and into the box office hall of fame, opening with the highest earnings of any movie to date in 2019.
Critics called Brie Larson’s performance “thrilling, gripping and spectacular” delivering “everything you want from a Marvel movie and more”, and audiences seem to agree.
Marvel Studios’ first female lead took £12.75m over its three-day weekend in the UK and Ireland, bringing its global haul to $455m, a record for a Marvel origins movie and the sixth largest worldwide debut in history.
“We are thrilled that Marvel Studios’ first lead female super hero movie has not only become the UK and Ireland’s number one film but has had the biggest opening ever for a Marvel Studios’ character debut,” says Lee Jury, Head of Walt Disney Studios UK & Ireland.
“We hope that Brie Larson’s portrayal of Carol Danvers will provide a new role model for generations to come and look forward to seeing Captain Marvel continue to go higher, further and faster at the box office.”
Alongside Larson in the title role, Captain Marvel stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Rune Temte, Algenis Perez Soto, Mckenna Grace, with Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.
