Funko names Bandai exclusive distributor for Japan thumbnail

Bandai will take full control of Funko’s distribution channels in Japan later this year.

The Pop! vinyl maker has appointed Bandai as the exclusive distributor of its licensed product portfolio, which will take over from the fourth quarter 2020.

“Japanese pop culture fans will be overjoyed to know that we have exclusively partnered with Bandai to distribute Funko Pop! vinyl figures, soft lines, plush and board games within Japan,” says Brian Mariotti, CEO of Funko.

“Partnering with Bandai is yet another example of the investment we are making in our global distribution and commitment to service our retail partners and consumers across the world."

The focus will be on increasing the popularity of Pop! vinyl figurines from Funko’s gaming, anime, movie and TV stable in the Japanese mass market. Pops are already available from hit anime properties such as Dragon Ball Z, My Hero Acadmeia and Naruto, making the partnership and combined goals a good fit.

Shinjiro Kaji, General Manager of Asia Toy Strategy Department of Bandai Co. Ltd, says: “We are delighted that we now have a business partnership with Funko. We recognize that Funko Pop! is one of the most popular vinyl figures in the world and they’ve established a strong brand in the market. We look forward to expanding Pop! in our market and in global business together.”
