Thomas & Friends has found a new home with Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana, which is taking responsibility for the brand in Canada.
The new deal excludes toys, which will be handled by the property’s owner Mattel, but includes a multitude of exclusivemerchandise categories and broadcasting responsibilities for the region.
“Thomas & Friends is one of the most iconic pre-school brands of all time and we’re delighted to partner with Mattel and welcome it into the Corus family,” says Pam Westman, Head of Nelvana Enterprises. “With Thomas & Friends, we are on the right track to engaging pre-schoolers on our network and delivering the world’s favourite tank engine on multiple platforms across Canada.”
Corus Entertainment’s Treehouse, a leading pre-school channel in Canada, becomes the new hub for the long-running Thomas & Friends series, which will be available across the network’s traditional and non-linear platforms, including Treehouse on Demand, Treehouse Classic, and the TreehouseGO App. Broadcast will get underway with Thomas & Friends: The Adventure Begins on Treehouse on 5 October, and season 22 will come to the network the following weekend. Best of Thomas & Friends episodes will start rolling out on the channel starting Monday, 15 October.
“We could not pick a better broadcast and licensing partner for Thomas in Canada,” adds Tara George, Country Manager, Mattel Canada. “The strength of Treehouse and Nelvana Enterprises in the Canadian pre-school market is second to none.”
