Fifty artists from 12 countries have reinterpreted Popeye for an art exhibition in Beijing as part of the comic character’s 90th anniversary celebrations.

King Features Syndicate and local agent Medialink joined forces with pop culture company YOHO! to present the collected works and installations at the popular Joy City shopping mall.

The exhibition features more than 100 pieces of Popeye creative works, including traditional and classic art, technology, collectibles, and even a large double-deck, 8-meter vintage sailboat.

The exhibition and pop-up store have already sold hundreds of limited-edition Popeye products, some of which sold out on the first day. The Popeye 90th Anniversary Exhibition opened in June and runs until 4 August.

“The Popeye 90th Anniversary Art Exhibition is a perfect crossover of Popeye-inspired classic IP, art and fashion,” says Carla Silva, Vice President and General Manager, Global Head of Licensing for King Features. “We are thrilled to be working with these amazing artists for this special birthday tribute in China.”

The art exhibition continues King Features’ year-long celebration of Popeye’s 90th birthday. An extensive merchandising program has already seen the launch of high-end fashion collaborations with Huf and Scotch & Soda, new products from Zara, and the launch of Popeye’s Barbershop & Shave Company, a special 90th anniversary collection of men’s grooming products.
