Licensing veterans yesterday evening celebrated the life of industry pioneer David Cardwell, who sadly passed away late last year.
LTW.MEDIA boss Malcolm Naish headed down to the event to share fond memories, laughs, and a few drinks to celebrate David's life and legacy, and shares more below.
“The great and the good of the licensing fraternity assembled at Shepherd’s Tavern in Hertford Street, London last night to remember David Cardwell. David had sadly passed away last autumn and this was his partner in CPL for many years Richard Culley’s idea to bring us all together in a celebration of David’s life.
“It was a veritable who’s who of CPL’s executives from years past, most of whom cut their teeth in the licensing industry thanks to David and Richard’s company.
“Kelvyn Gardner set the scene with his look at David’s career and then Richard Culley kept us all amused with some of the hilarious happenings during a number of important business meetings over the years, where Richard’s ability to make David laugh – LOL – kept us in stitches.
“Richard concluded with his story of David who was driving them in David’s Lotus Esprit on a busy motorway. According to Richard, David rarely got out of second gear, but in this particular instance was driving too fast and the Lotus ended up smashing into the back of a rather large lorry.
“The result of the smash saw the rear axle move from its normal place to finish just above their heads. Fortunately, both gentlemen emerged unscathed.
“Funnily enough, I ended up buying that bright red Lotus Esprit from David in 1989/90 obviously with a new engine and body, plus hopefully a new back axle.
“So my thanks on behalf of everyone to Richard and Jane for a lovely evening, remembering a rather remarkable man who along with Richard shaped the long-term future of the British and European licensing business.”
