Transformers returns to 80s roots in Bumblebee thumbnail

The first proper trailer for Hasbro and Paramount’s Transformers spin-off Bumblebee movie dropped yesterday with a surprising new look and feel.

Playing straight into the nostalgic hands of longtime fans – and acting as a soft reboot for younger Transformers buffs – the most obvious change is Bumblebee’s new Beetle chassis. Well, it’s actually not new at all, rather a return to the Autobot’s original trappings after he was reborn in the body of a Chevrolet Camaro throughout the 11 years Michael Bay helmed the blockbuster series.

Back in his old body, there are plenty of other hints to that 80s aesthetic that veteran fans will recognise – even down to the appearance of the ubiquitous foam Walkman headphones. Familiar faces on both sides of the Autobot/Decepticon divide – namely Optimus Prime, Shockwave and Soundwave – crop up in the teaser with similar adaptations of the original Saturday morning cartoon series’ distinctive visual style.
