Sony Music UK has launched a new kids’ record label called Magic Star, through which it intends to partner with

The new division will partner up with established brand leaders in the family entertainment market, as well as other Sony entertainment companies. It will also work in tandem with each of Sony Music UK’s to explore new projects targeted at family audiences.

Nicola Tuer, COO, Sony Music UK and Ireland, says: “We recognise family entertainment as an untapped market, so launching Magic Star provides a wealth of opportunity for us and will strengthen our capacity for growth.”

Will Speer, described by Nicola as “a highly respected executive with a track record of success and knowledge in the industry”, will lead Magic Star as Head of the label.

He brings more than 15 years’ experience from the kids’ entertainment industry to the role, most recently at NBCUniversal where he oversaw international marketing for DreamWorks TV and NBCU Kids and Family.

“Sony Music have identified a huge opportunity within the family entertainment market to create fresh new audio and audio-visual content and also have access to a wide repertoire of signed artists who already have huge family appeal,” he says.

“The scope is endless, and I am very much looking forward to bringing my experience in kids’ media to such an entertainment powerhouse like Sony Music.”

Prior to NBCU, Will was EMEA Marketing Director at Mattel, working Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Thomas and Friends, and the toy companies other biggest pre-school brands of the period. He also spent just shy of a decade at the Walt Disney Company, managing brands such as Monsters University and Hannah Montana across TV, digital and theatrical.
